As the newish boy (I mean I have been round the block a few times), but I’m new in this neighbourhood. Where was I?… ah, yes. As the new-ish boy, I’ve asked some questions, got some answers and asked some more questions. Today I went up the chain and asked some questions in the form of a meeting with some more senior people….

I got some different answers. Not the same as some of the answers I got earlier. So now it appears there are a few pigeons about, and the cat is right in amongst them.

Ultimately this will be a good thing, and should result in us being able to get some stuff done. Time will tell if that is true, but for now – feathers have been ruffled in an appropriate manner.

This evening will involve me explaining this situation to an interested King and a beer.

Tomorrow will involve me counting down to my escape to the races and Thursday will see me, quite literally, off to the races. Unless the Coronavirus stops all the fun in the meantime.

Which reminds me. They want their toilet paper back…

There’s a few people with axes to grind, but generally they’re a good bunch.

Staying at the golf course.

<img data-attachment-id="3563" data-permalink="https://golfyball.wordpress.com/2020/03/09/travelling-monday/img_0089/" data-orig-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_0089.jpg" data-orig-size="1713,542" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="img_0089" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_0089.jpg?w=300" data-large-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_0089.jpg?w=723" src="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_0089.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-3563" srcset="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_0089.jpg?w=1024 1024w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_0089.jpg?w=150 150w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_0089.jpg?w=300 300w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_0089.jpg?w=768 768w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_0089.jpg 1713w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />

Can’t say that this drives me to say much, beyond I’m looking forward to stopping here in the summer and getting a couple of walks in down to the Woodbridge Inn…. all things being equal.

It’s a bit of a rabbit warren, and the traffic on the bypass isn;t much fun while the road is being resurfaced – but otherwise. Absolutely just above average.

The talk everywhere is that of buying toilet rolls (for no obvious reason but relating to Covid-19) and suffering from a virus (or not as the case may be). Strange times.

Now wash your hands again.

Brother-in-laws 41st birthday, so dropped off a card, had a cup of tea and a slice of cake (from Waitrose) which we picked up on the way their while trying to find a very specific brass / copper seed tray… It’s out there somewhere.

Which after some faffing, due to the fact that Mr Ordinance Survey wanted 250 quid, I got for 16 pounds and a frame for 50. It’s the same map as the 250 one, from Mr OS, but it’s in my own supplied frame, framed by my own hand. And very nice it looks too.

But. When I put it on the wall – I decided that the wall it was on, was in need of a coat of paint. I suppose it’s been about 5 years since it was last done, so yep – due.

And this is how I find myself with brush and roller in hand up the stairs trying not to drip it everywhere, and doing a half decent job of it too.

In my current role, Friday morning’s have a call that lasts for about an hour and is an opportunity for the “team” to get together and voice their opinions and update everyone on what they’ve been doing. It’s a bit of a strange session. Feels like it doesn’t have much structure and wanders around until everyone’s had a go.

The boss is usually there, so they all follow his lead – but he too is a bit of a meanderer… I dunno. Is it useful? Probably. Does it feel useful? Not particularly.

I was glad when Friday ended and the weekend arrived.

I was even more glad when Mrs G got home – because I miss her – more than she knows.

In other news – this Virus situation is starting to get a bit scarey… I hope the horse racing makes it…

On this occasion, doubly so because daughter suggested getting together for some lunch. It was a delight at about 12, to hear her knocking the door with a small blue gift bag in her hand…

Here you go she said thrusting it into my hands. To my surprise it was a “Fortnum and Mason” bag with a jar of my absolute favourite marmalade in it. She is such a star. Truly the apple of my eye.

On the bad side, she included chocolate, which wont do my diet any good at all, but of course she is forgiven and I’ll find a way of consuming it slowly over a suitably long period as to minimise it’s impact. We set off to the quays in search of sustenance.

<img data-attachment-id="3557" data-permalink="https://golfyball.wordpress.com/2020/03/06/lunch-with-daughter-and-a-little-wtc-crawl/img_2301/" data-orig-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2301.jpg" data-orig-size="3024,4032" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 11 Pro Max","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1583410936","copyright":"","focal_length":"6","iso":"64","shutter_speed":"0.01","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="img_2301" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2301.jpg?w=225" data-large-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2301.jpg?w=723" src="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2301.jpg?w=768" alt="" class="wp-image-3557" srcset="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2301.jpg?w=768 768w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2301.jpg?w=1536 1536w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2301.jpg?w=113 113w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2301.jpg?w=225 225w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" />

Some cracking bruschetta and a pornstar Martini

There a nice little new place that used to be a burger restaurant and is now a trattoria. Turns out it’s not that new – it’s been here since November (I had no clue) – but it is just fancy enough not to be off putting, and with totally delicious food. Very Impressed. I’ll be back with Mrs G.

Daughter shot off to the opticians, and I caught the bus home, just in time for my 1pm call. a little rushed, but a perfect break in the day.

Chubby decided he’d like to come out for a beer again. I occasionally worry that he’s unsure of what he expects of the world. But I don’t over worry. It’s up to him if he wants to join us or not. The whole point of the WTC is to have a night out and get stuff off your chest in a safe place – or just have a beer.

And so it was that Bri picked me up and with Chubby already on board, we shot off into the City to meet Claude in the Fountain. A swift two in here while Chubby and Bri ate (Claude had already, and I”d had plenty for lunch, obv). Then a wander round to Angies (smallest bar in the City) for one, followed by a visit to the Bell, where it was open Mike night.

My review, Alright, but a bit poor.

BAck to the Fountain for a final one before I graciously declined the lift and walked back home – I need the excercise and trhe practice what with the big walk, just around the corner.

And so to sleep and before you know it – it’s Friday!!

Enjoy
G

A bit odd, but great all the same. This means I now have a Thursday, Friday Saturday AND a Sunday at home, and ordinarily I’d have a Monday too – but not this week….

There was supposed to be a picture frame waiting for me when I got home. Specially made to order (because it’s so damn big) to hang my custom map on the wall. But apparently not.

A Tuesday full of work nonsense, but parking that, I went off and had a pizza for dinner followed by another trip to see Dark Waters with The Incredible Hulk (aka Mark Ruffalo) – aka the Gruffalo (just me?)

“Parking that” ?? I mean ffs. What sort of bullsh1t talk is that. It’s only a stones throw from there to “let’s unpack this” when talking about understanding the detail of something. And that just makes my blood boil. What arsehole started using that? It’s bloody everywhere now. I even heard it on Radio 4 last week. Ridiculous.

On the way through the middle of the shopping center of Telford, I was also interested to note the Knife Angel.

The National Memorial to Knife Crime Victims

This is a piece of art made from over 100,000 knife blades that have been gathered by all 43 police forces in the UK. It’s a touring piece of art, designed to raise awareness, and educate the dangers and in fact, shear stupidity of knife crime. It’s a beautiful piece….. if a bit… stabby.

Anyway. Where was I?

Ah yes. Dark Waters.

This film is about something that affects you. Unless you’re part of the 1% of the worlds population that doesn’t have a POFA in your bloodstream. It’s 2 hours of a courtroom drama, a David v Goliath, and another piece with a real message attached to it (that’s two in as many weeks).

I don’t want to tell you too much about it, but I do want you to go an watch it. It’s great. Devastating, but great.

That’s it for now. Until next time…

Oh.. wait.. By the way, the Dark Water that I referred to at the beginning is bloody awesome mind you. You should watch that too. But it’s a horror film, and almost as scary as Dark Waters.

Note having to get up at the crack of dawn and fight my way through the Monday morning commute with everyone else is a thing I treasure. As I noted the other day, a few more of you might get a go at it shortly if this Mexican Beer Virus keeps up. I digress.

This Monday however, I found myself in the car on the way up north without a hint of a lie-in. It feels like the weekend didn’t really happen. It also feels like I haven’t been home for a week – although of course I have; it just feels a bit like I’m living out of a suitcase.

Two meetings in THE office and one in the OTHER place mean I’ve been backwards and forwards across the car park all day. I actually don;t mind that too much (as long as it;s not raining). It’s a good bit of exercise.

I’m quite concerned about our confusing colleague. Just too confusing. But it is what it is. It’s a bit stressful.

And on the subject of stressful, my evening….

So a quick change after checking in and a walk across the car park found me sitting in another lounge (not portivo) about to order my dinner, when the boss rings. Good to catch up, but a bit short given I was out and really he could have done with being at at least one of the meetings – but I’ll have some time with him tomorrow. Perhaps he’ll have a plan or some news… who knows

After my burger and beer, I had a ticket to go and see “The Invisible Man” and man is that stressful. I did get to see it in an IMAX all to myself – when it eventually started – some software glitch with he timer that kicks it off meant I didn’t have to suffer any adverts. The fact that it’s IMAX means it’s absorbing. You feel like you’re a bit more “in it” and this may not be the sort of film you want to feel like that in. It’s edgy, loud, and un-nerving. I loved it for the fear factor.

<img data-attachment-id="3543" data-permalink="https://golfyball.wordpress.com/2020/03/03/an-invisible-monday/img_2285/" data-orig-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2285.jpg" data-orig-size="4032,3024" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"1.8","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 11 Pro Max","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1583176122","copyright":"","focal_length":"4.25","iso":"640","shutter_speed":"0.04","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="img_2285" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2285.jpg?w=300" data-large-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2285.jpg?w=723" src="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2285.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-3543" srcset="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2285.jpg?w=1024 1024w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2285.jpg?w=2048 2048w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2285.jpg?w=150 150w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2285.jpg?w=300 300w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2285.jpg?w=768 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />

IMAX’s are big. Especially when they’re empty.

Not many movies keep my heart rate up – this did – and I think 50% of that was the IMAX effect. Most terrifying and most enjoyable.

The trailer doesn’t do it justice. Elizabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) is very believable. It does have a reasonably predictable plot… to begin with. Gets a lot more interesting though. And actually I was glad it was over, just so the stress level went back down. Give it a go if you dare.

Enjoy your Tuesday
Been a few of these in the last year to two… Not least because of Daughters. A truly awesome day that was, and I’ll wax lyrical about it on another occasion.

This one was a particularly posh job, being as it was held in Gloucester Cathedral. A stunning location to get hitched. And on the EXTRA day that we have this year, given that it’s a leap year…. great timing, and only one wedding anniversary to remember for every four years.. Very clever.

Big innit?

It was a cracking event. It’s a beautiful building so makes for excellent backdrop and the two people involved couldn’t have appeared both at home, and deserving of such a special place.

We had a great time and they really treated us to something Special. The reception and the evening were held in nearby Elmore Court, which is another stunning building. Superb food, and awesome band and we stayed the night in one of the rooms. A proper treat.

A great breakfast to set us up for the day – and help soak up the alcohol.

The only problem was, it was all over too soon, and so was the weekend! I can’t believe it’s Monday tomorrow. Devastated…

Thanks for an awesome time though. Huge hugs to them both. They’re off to Cyprus now – alright for some.

Result. Although given the news of late, there’;s every possibly that might become a thing for a while. There appears to be a virus on the loose causing havoc – at least according to the stock markets… we’ll see,

Anyway, we have a wedding to go to on Saturday, but this also is going to be the shortest weekend in my recent history. I had an earlier start than usual, because daughter needed a lift to the station. She was off to London for the day/overnight to see her friend (bit of a birthday treat for her mate) and have tea in Tower 42. She was on good form, and it was great to see her for 10 minutes.

Work is fine, but still not making any traction. If I’m honest, for the first time in a long time, I’m not enjoying it much. I’m sticking at it for the time being though. Anything could happen. I’ll just keep asking awkward questions.

After school, and as Mrs G had the day off, the two of us whizzed into town because I needed a new shirt (one became 3) and a tie for tomorrows posh do and she needed to return a dress that she’d decided she didn’t like. I do like Hawks & Curtis – they fit. We stopped in Portivo Lounge for our dinner too.

<img data-attachment-id="3539" data-permalink="https://golfyball.wordpress.com/2020/02/28/friday-and-packing-again/img_2185/" data-orig-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2185.jpg" data-orig-size="3024,4032" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"1.8","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 11 Pro Max","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1582909371","copyright":"","focal_length":"4.25","iso":"800","shutter_speed":"0.04","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="img_2185" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2185.jpg?w=225" data-large-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2185.jpg?w=723" src="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2185.jpg?w=768" alt="" class="wp-image-3539" srcset="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2185.jpg?w=768 768w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2185.jpg?w=1536 1536w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2185.jpg?w=113 113w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_2185.jpg?w=225 225w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" />

She was a bit grumpy because I can’t remember everything all the time, which she translates into me not listening. I do listen. I just have a head full of stuff all the time and not everything gets filed in the right place. I’m a bit rubbish really. It probably is early onset Alzheimer’s, but no-one wants to admit that do they.

We caught up with “Flesh and Blood” with Imelda Staunton in it. Pretty good. Certainly a watchable bit of Drama. Imelda’s on track to become our next national treasure I guess.

Until I’m next here, take it easy
Day started off as it usually does on a Thursday with checking out of the hotel and driving to THE office. I had a meeting in this building so went and got set up.

20 minutes and the fire alarm goes off. This isn’t unusual, there’s a test every week. However, this isn’t the time of day of the test, so it’s a real thing – potentially. Meeting (along with the rest of the building) evacuates to the car park and stands around int he cold. Luckily it wasn’t raining.

After 20 minutes of chatting and getting cold, finally some news… A suspicious package has been found. Oooo. That’s interesting, and most unusual. Rumours of an hour’s wait time and of bomb disposal being called circulate through the assembled throng like wildfire – or at least quite quickly. And then a little later, everyone gets let back into the building. However, with attendee’s spread to the far corners of the car park, the meeting takes more than a little time to resume, and in fact never really does. Time has stood up from it’s lazy deck chair, and with the pace of a gazelle in the company of a cheetah, has, run out.

Fine by me. It was boring anyway.

Turns out that the resumed meeting got very confusing; and I’m not sure why. There is a member of that group that confuses, so it could be that… I know it wasn’t me. I didn’t say anything more. All very … normal.

<img data-attachment-id="3537" data-permalink="https://golfyball.wordpress.com/2020/02/27/blowing-up-thursdays/img_0086/" data-orig-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_0086.jpg" data-orig-size="1714,546" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="img_0086" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_0086.jpg?w=300" data-large-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_0086.jpg?w=723" src="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_0086.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-3537" srcset="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_0086.jpg?w=1024 1024w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_0086.jpg?w=150 150w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_0086.jpg?w=300 300w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_0086.jpg?w=768 768w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/img_0086.jpg 1714w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />

I was glad to go home. Didn’t get to have a beer with the gang. Floods made it tricky for some, and to be honest even I wasn’t really in the mood for it.

Until next time

I’m not complaining though. I actually am looking forward to Thursday and going home. I’ve become a bit bored of being away all the time. I mean, it’s a means to an end and all that, but it’s all a bit meh.

I got to catchup a bit with those that haven’t been around. It didn’t help a great deal. I really can’t tell if I”m adding value with every stone I turn over, or I’m just pi$$ing people off. I guess I’ll just keep going until someone tells me to stop. Generally it appears that it’s helpful.

Tomorrow will see me doing stuff in THE office, as opposed to the OTHER place, so it might be more interesting. There will also be some travelling home, so that’s good and equally, there might be beer at some point too – so another plus.

I’ll let you know.

Sad to see the barrier finally let the water through at Ironbridge, and the beloved White Hart took a hit. Hope they can all get back to normal soon tho.

I have to get up early and drive to far flung parts of the country. Worse still when the weather is crap. And after such a good weekend and a reasonably sedate Monday. Really rubbish.

I can’t complain. Some people have it far far worse. I’m actually incredibly lucky. And I’m not Greedy. More on that in a mo.

The work involves a chunk of governance on Tuesdays, which I generally quite enjoy. It’s good to see how teams are getting on and if their following the advice. Of course the advice had been somewhat random up to now – at least from what I can see. I’m trying to fix that. That’s what I’m here for. Make things easier. Help get the job done. And done properly.

And before you know it, that’s the morning gone. A sandwich for lunch and then an afternoon of trying to help get some documentation done. Meh. All very average.

And then to the evening. Checkin to the hotel and dash out for a bite to eat and today, catch a movie. And today’s film of choice?? Greed. With Steve Coogan.

I love Mr Coogan’s Alan Partridge and I’ve seen his other things, so I know he’s capable of being other characters.

It’s a bit like that line from the American Manager in “Yesterday”… ‘I really hated that, but so much, that I don’t want to hear it again to understand why’

And in this instance? So this is no comedy, but it is good satire. As such, I t has plenty of comedic moments in it. An enjoyable tale, that kept me interested throughout. Clearly based on some real life individuals (Sir Philip Green for one), and with a excellent right-on message but not a message it sells in a punchy way – and for that reason, it’s likely to miss it’s mark. You never really care about the characters. Those that you should, never seem to develop just enough for you to want to empathise with them. You kind of want to root for them, but you just never seem to know quite enough to be on their side. For making the message the thing, it so very very nearly works, that it’s hard to explain why it doesn’t.

That aside, the premise is wildly entertaining, and David Mitchell is the steady straight-man biographer to the rambunctious hyper-wealthy Rich “Greedy” McCreadie.

In the end, a good watch, and a bit odd.

It features a million cameos from anyone who’s been on the TV for more than 5 minutes, and not out of place. I got it. I just don’t really know what to do with it.

After the movie I’d planned a swift pint and a curry in the nearby whetherspoons and then completely went off the idea in favour of an early night. Probably for the best.

Oh. By the way. Mark Ruffalo in Dark Waters… the Incredible Hulk becomes a lawyer.

Until tomorrow.
Answer at the bottom of the page

As of Sunday 23rd of February the following is fact:

Morse: 33

Lewis: 33

Endeavour: 30

It’s not some sort of cryptic puzzle. It’s the number of episodes of each of the TV Series. Inspector Morse followed the namesake of the series title as he investigated (and for the most part, solved) a series of murders in and around Oxford – with a couple of exceptions. He did this with his trusty sergeant Lewis. After 33 episodes the felt it had run it’s course, although this had more to do with the health of John Thaw in truth.

<img data-attachment-id="3520" data-permalink="https://golfyball.wordpress.com/2020/02/24/of-morse-and-men/71eacaff-b477-41ea-b382-e4dc0296ad92-11175-00000e7a7b412270_file/" data-orig-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/71eacaff-b477-41ea-b382-e4dc0296ad92-11175-00000e7a7b412270_file.jpg" data-orig-size="780,1147" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="71eacaff-b477-41ea-b382-e4dc0296ad92-11175-00000e7a7b412270_file" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/71eacaff-b477-41ea-b382-e4dc0296ad92-11175-00000e7a7b412270_file.jpg?w=204" data-large-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/71eacaff-b477-41ea-b382-e4dc0296ad92-11175-00000e7a7b412270_file.jpg?w=696" src="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/71eacaff-b477-41ea-b382-e4dc0296ad92-11175-00000e7a7b412270_file.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3520" />

A few years later and with a prominent gap in the market, Sergeant Lewis found a promotion, and as a result his own series, this time with a new sidekick, Sergeant Hathaway. And once more after 33 episodes, enough was enough. This time however, wasn’t down to ill health, but more likely respect for John Thaw, who truly owned the role of Morse and had passed away.

And yet… still the public want more… and so a couple of years later, with he same gap still yearning to be filled, we all travelled back in time to meet the young Morse, before he earned his Sergants stripes, let alone inspector, in the series Endeavour. And what an Endeavour it’s been. And now, after 7 series, they’ve reached 30 episodes….

So what happens next?

Well, it’s a safe bet there’s going to be another 3, and most likely final, episodes of Endeavour bringing us back to the 6th of January 1987 – or thereabouts. Series 7 was set in the early 70’s, so I guess series 8 will be the late 70’s/early 80’s – they should just about be able to get there with some clever writing and a little luck.

But….

33 + 33 + 33 = 99. Hmmmmm. There has to be just one more….

Suggestions on a postcard please….

Until next time

Set off about 9am to pick up Mother in Law and her other half. All she knew was that she would need some walking gear, and an overnight bag. It was fun to hear her spending a chunk of the journey trying to guess what we were up to, but she had no clue. I love dishing out surprises..

By the time we were nearing Telford, she was pretty much on the money with our destination, but we didn’t confirm it until we were down the side of the valley and entering Ironbridge proper.

<img data-attachment-id="3518" data-permalink="https://golfyball.wordpress.com/2020/02/23/more-of-the-bridge-made-of-iron/img_2112-1/" data-orig-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_2112-1.jpg" data-orig-size="3437,2131" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"1.8","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 11 Pro Max","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1582131596","copyright":"","focal_length":"4.25","iso":"160","shutter_speed":"0.016666666666667","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="img_2112-1" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_2112-1.jpg?w=300" data-large-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_2112-1.jpg?w=770" src="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_2112-1.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-3518" srcset="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_2112-1.jpg?w=1024 1024w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_2112-1.jpg?w=2048 2048w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_2112-1.jpg?w=150 150w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_2112-1.jpg?w=300 300w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_2112-1.jpg?w=768 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />

High Water at The Iron Bridge, Ironbridge

All a bit challenging due to the floods, but we coped. The two main car parks at the eastern end of the town were full, so we had to take the very narrow road up the hill and down to Dale End Park. In the week, this car park was underwater, but it was back to a level of normality.

We though we’d be able to walk along the wharf behind the flood barrier to the White Hart, but that would only get us as far as the Malthouse. From here we had to go up the hill on Church road and back down the other side into the town square – quite a significant climb with luggage, but we managed.

Rooms were ready, and the birthday girl got a river view. A quick half of Guinness and we were off again. This time walking up the road (Tontine Hill) past the bridge itself and on to the roundabout. Bearing right down past the old Bedlam furnaces, past the Bind in Hand and Ye Old Robin Hood Inn. Don’t cross the Newbridge, but carryon to the Lloyds (watching for the famous falling over cottage). Following the river, after a while you’ll reach a junction. Bear right onto Coalport High Street and stay on this road until you have passed the Inclined railway line, The Shakespeare Inn, the YHA, The Brewery Inn, cross a small bridge and reach the junction. Here, turn right, down Coalport road, down the hill and over The Coalport Bridge, to the WoodBridge Inn for lunch. Takes about 45mins to an hour depending on your leisurely pace, and it’s worth it. The food is great, and the pub is beautiful. On top of which the return journey is even more picturesque.

<img data-attachment-id="3515" data-permalink="https://golfyball.wordpress.com/2020/02/23/more-of-the-bridge-made-of-iron/img_2128/" data-orig-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_2128.jpg" data-orig-size="4032,3024" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 11 Pro Max","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1582376184","copyright":"","focal_length":"6","iso":"20","shutter_speed":"0.0028169014084507","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="img_2128" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_2128.jpg?w=300" data-large-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_2128.jpg?w=770" src="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_2128.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-3515" srcset="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_2128.jpg?w=1024 1024w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_2128.jpg?w=2048 2048w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_2128.jpg?w=150 150w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_2128.jpg?w=300 300w, https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_2128.jpg?w=768 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />

The (not very wooden) Coalport Bridge, by the Woodbridge Inn

This time, stay south of the river. Cross the road from the WoodBridge Inn and follow the Severn Valley Way. When you get out of the woods (you’re not there yet) you can visit the Maws Craft Center (to your right) or press on tot he Half Moon Inn and up into Jackfield. Here you can visit the Tile Museum, or carry on a bit further, bearing to the right to follow the river, and stop into the Black Swan. A lovely pint and bite to eat if you skipped lunch at the Woodbridge. On a fine day you can sit outside and admire the river too. In the garden on the Black Swan there’s some steps that lead up to the Severn Valley Way (which is behind the pub). Usually you can follow this all the way back to the car park on the south side of the river at the Iron Bridge itself. Some spectacular views across the river of the rest of the town and the church from here. And of course back across the Iron Bridge, into Ironbridge.

The whole route is about 5 miles and not strenuous. Highly recommended for views and food and beverages on a warm or at least dry afternoon.

If you really want to top it off though. Dinner in the White Hart is an incredible thing. Why this place doesn’t have Michelin stars is beyond me. But don;’t take my word for it – go and eat there yourself. I promise you wont regret it, and its amazing value too. Mother-inLaw loved it as much as I do, and so my brownie points were well and truly earned.

A good nights sleep, and incredibly great breakfast (not that it was required, but it was not to be missed) and an easy journey home including a stop at “Dudmaston Hall” and a bit of Sunday lunch – bang goes the diet this weekend – and really you couldn’t ask for anymore from a cheeky overnighter.

We had a good chat this morning, and afterwards, I played the conversation back in my head. I think I was quite shouty. It’s the frustration. Of course, in true leadership style he reminded me that the role can be what I make it to be. Cutting through the bluster, that says to me that no-one really has a plan for what’s going on, so see if you can do a better job of it.

As I say – frustrating. And I hate myself for ranting.

Putting all that to one side though – it’s Friday, meaning it’s practically Saturday, and I’m very much looking forward to spoiling the Mother-In-Law, a bit of a walk and some decent food out and about. She has mono clue what we’re up to.

In other news; my map arrived!.. I haven’t mentioned this here, but I’ve ordered a piece of art (well sort of) to hang on the hall wall. It’s actually a custom Ordinance Survey map of the surround area – and it looks beautiful. It does need a frame (and that’s in the works) but the map itself is perfect. Very pleased with the way that’s turned out.

I wont be needing it tomorrow; having spent pretty much the last year where we’re headed, but it’s good to know the the OS bits and girls in Southampton can produce such wonderful things. They actually make about 10,000 updates a day to “the map” which is the master data set for not only the Explorer/Landranger series of maps (which is actually only 5% of what they do) but also the basis for pretty much every government project that requires any sort of mapping data; from 5cm accuracy upwards. It’s a pretty incredible thing.

You’d have thought with his great boats… I digress

I am getting concerned about the work situation. I just don’t feel like I’m adding value now. I feel like I’m having the same conversation over and over again. “We’re not here to transform (as nice as that would be)” it’s painful.

There was however, barely any serious traffic to speak of, which considering the flooding situation along the Severn, was a most pleasant surprise, and it meant I arrived home plenty early enough. Unfortunately Mrs G was working large, so I didn’t get to see her until I got in, and she was happily dozing away.

There’s been good news from the White Hart (our destination for the weekend), in that they are re-opening, so fingers crossed, all should go to plan.

The floods didn’t breach the barrier overnight, but I really can’t see if we’ll be back to Ironbridge at the weekend. I haven’t lost all hope, but it’s looking unlikely. The Hotel is suggesting they may get to re-open tomorrow. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

I had a good walk around the valley to see how bad things were up at the bridge – that involved some severe hill climbs because of the road closures – and it had the double advantage of a decent calorie burn too.

Nice easy journey – half term means the roads are very clear which I guess is because so many people have the week off to look after their kids.

Work might be morphing into a role I didn’t sign up for. So I need to play things very carefully for a few days. Nothing worse than being brought in to do one job, and then because of a lack of resources or bad planning end up being given some other problem to solve.

I’m staying in Ironbridge and it’s desperately sad to see the floods are staying here too. There’s a very impressive set of temporary flood defences that they put in place along the Wharfage which seem to do a great job of protecting the houses along that stretch. However, on the opposite bank, the water levels just rise up, and the houses that are there suffer as a result.

This is the problem with flood barriers – you are just moving the problem downstream, or in this case, to the opposite bank. These are problems of our own making. A combination of building and poor water management with a lack of dredging mean that an increased volume of water has to go somewhere. And I don’t think these volumes of water are unusual – they just have fewer places to go and less depth to do it in. At least – that how it seems to me.

I do like Mondays (mostly). Lately, they mean I get to work from home, and so I don’t have to be up at the crack of dawn to be somewhere else. They’re a gentle way into the working week at the moment, so I quite like them. I’ve no doubt that will change in the fullness of time, but get what you can while it’s there. And it’s stopped raining. For now.

What’s this week got in store then?

I have a calendar full of clashes tomorrow, so that will messy, but I understand that the welsh accountant is about for a catchup too… So that will be messy as well I expect.

I’ve also had an intriguing and somewhat odd message regarding my new role, and potential change to it – which given I’ve only been doing it for five minutes is a little disturbing. I’m currently very much of the opinion that certain senior individuals don’t have a Scoobie what it is that they’re trying to achieve. But then that is so often the way lately.

The river’s very high in Ironbridge as a result of the Dennis/Ellen situation, so that’ll be interesting (expect photos) in tomorrow night’s or Wednesday’s post. I’m looking forward to the weekend when we’ll be back this way to entertain mother-in-law for her birthday. More on that when it happens.

Left over chicken with rice and peas for dinner, and bloody delicious it was too.

Have fun
I also hear, that Storm Ellen is right behind him, so best strap in. It’s going to get wet.

<img data-attachment-id="3479" data-permalink="https://golfyball.wordpress.com/2020/02/16/sunday-in-the-rain/bb407c27-5e2b-4135-a031-a10974fc7ecb-5051-00000775a5c27a57_file/" data-orig-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/bb407c27-5e2b-4135-a031-a10974fc7ecb-5051-00000775a5c27a57_file.jpg" data-orig-size="590,350" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="bb407c27-5e2b-4135-a031-a10974fc7ecb-5051-00000775a5c27a57_file" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/bb407c27-5e2b-4135-a031-a10974fc7ecb-5051-00000775a5c27a57_file.jpg?w=300" data-large-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/bb407c27-5e2b-4135-a031-a10974fc7ecb-5051-00000775a5c27a57_file.jpg?w=590" src="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/bb407c27-5e2b-4135-a031-a10974fc7ecb-5051-00000775a5c27a57_file.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3479" />

We did venture out a bit. You may recall daughters’ car battery has arrived (along with a tap for the kitchen – don’t ask me) so a trip to her house to feed the cats (She and son-in-law are away for the weekend) and fit said battery was in order.

The rain had turned to drizzle about mid morning, so now was the time to strike. A very simple job of undoing three bolts, taking out the old battery, dropping in the new and doing the bolts up again. I’ve left it for to her to reset the car’s clock and the radio.

While we were out and about, we nipped into Tesco and bought a chicken and accompanying bits for a roast dinner. Just for the two of us this week so nothing too dramatic. Son and girlfriend are up that Laandan. Strange when they get older and are no-where to be seen, but much like cats, I know that they’ll be back when they’re hungry.

Good to see Tiger Roll out for a run today, although he didn’t do the magic that he managed at last years Grand National. Still, it was his first run of the year. Penhill on the other hand, is one to keep an eye on I reckon. Did very well for me last year at the Festival.

Some of those space saving coat hangers have arrived (because I ordered them) and damn useful they are too. I’ve now got room to put stuff in the wardrobe again. Of course, I should really be throwing some stuff out – and that will come next time I buy some more stuff to put in – honest it will this time – I promise.

As well as hangers, I picked up a new wallet. I loved my existing one, but my plastic was getting bent, twisted or snapped – not least because I carried it around in my back pocket. Turns out that’s the perfect place for someone of a nefarious nature to scan it with a NFC reader… you’ve been warned. I’ve now got a NFC protecting hard case jobby. So far, so good.

Last thing for the day… Endeavour. Having been a fan of Morse from it’s inception, and then managed to cope with the switch to Lewis, I never thought I’d enjoy Endeavour – but it turns out I probably enjoy more (certainly as much as) the original’s themselves. Something to do with my dad and sixties/seventies policing I think. Well, that and a good whodunnit.

Now Monday is just around the corner. I’m off to bed.

As I’m not doing a big walk (thanks to the storm) I have made the effort as I eluded to yesterday and booked myself a tick to see Parasite.

So a leisurely start to the day. A bit of scrambled egg on sourdough and a cup of coffee. Catch up with the news. A quick tidy up. Even got the hoover out. This time of year, our particularly furry/fluffy cat seems to drop clumps at a time. It’s unbelievable. I guarantee by Sunday morning it’ll be everywhere again. She’s a beautiful pest.

By midday I’m in the barbers listening to some fella prattling on while waiting my turn. Usually I really enjoy a new overheard conversation and the snippets of information I learn from it, but on this occasion, a procurement officer over sharing his life story is just too much. He’s one of those ‘my life is better than everyone else’s’ types. Really cringy to listen to. Especially when he reveals he’s had the same job since he left school – so my lack of life experience warning light is flashing red. I contemplate walking out and coming back when it’s less busy, but in the end I ride it out.

Haircut done it’s off to the cinema. I grabbed the bus just outside with near perfect timing so I only had to stand in the rain for about 5 minutes. Hopped off in the middle of town and walked the last stretch, enabling me to pop into Tesco’s and by a bag of minstrels and a bottle of water for half (possibly less than half) the price they would be in the cinema. I could rant about the way cinema’s try to rip you off – but save it for another time…

And so to the main event; “Parasite”

I really enjoyed it, but I can’t say that I instantly loved it. It’s beautifully shot in that inner city kind of way and very nicely written. It has an intelligent, if slightly too hard to believe plot, but the 2 hours did fly by.

The standouts for me… “Money is an Iron” a great concept and kind of key to a large portion of the film. The poor family seem to live very low down in the city, while the rich family very high up. I did get the sense of climbing up a lot in the first half of the film, and descending down a lot in the second. In fact some of the descent in the storm I found to be mesmerising.

I think it’s a comedy/drama/thriller – whatever that is… there aren’t that many good ones of them, that’s for sure.

It’s very cleverly done. And I can see why it has won as many accolades and Oscar’s as it has. I think I need to see it again because there’s sooo much detail. Excellent work.

I read yesterday that it’s going to become some sort of Netflix serial – that sounds like a bad idea to me, but no doubt it will do well. I’ll be very interested to see how that works out.

Post cinema, on my way home in the drizzle, I picked up a couple of steaks for our dinner. Turns out Sainsbury’s off the shelf steaks are not all that great anymore (it’s been a while since I’d bought any from there to be fair). NExt time, stick to the butcher’s or the meat counter, or more surprisingly, Lidl – who do an awesome steak it seems.

Until the next one

Definitely sounds like a Bond song – I like it.

In other news – It’s Friday!! Always a good thing when you work for a living (unless you only work weekends I suppose). Thursday was, as Thursday does although with considerably less WTC than usual. We all had things that needed to be done, so we did them instead. There is the potential for the big walk training on Saturday (even though the weather forecast is not looking good) so that’ll make up for it.

I did have a couple of meetings that were slightly more interesting on Thursday. Finally feels like the new role might have some meat on it somewhere – although getting people to agree on things is often challenging and can get boring pretty quickly – but as usual, it’s all about time.

Finished off “White House Farm” – excellent work. I was most surprised to discover the role of Jeremy Bamber was played by Freddie Fox, Son of Edward Fox and Brother of Emilia Fox. That’s him in the middle…

<img data-attachment-id="3467" data-permalink="https://golfyball.wordpress.com/2020/02/14/the-bond-song-and-white-house-farm/523df6c0-2020-4931-9870-1be7a8e673c4-2810-0000050d55bc2a55_file/" data-orig-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/523df6c0-2020-4931-9870-1be7a8e673c4-2810-0000050d55bc2a55_file.jpg" data-orig-size="960,640" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="523df6c0-2020-4931-9870-1be7a8e673c4-2810-0000050d55bc2a55_file" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/523df6c0-2020-4931-9870-1be7a8e673c4-2810-0000050d55bc2a55_file.jpg?w=300" data-large-file="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/523df6c0-2020-4931-9870-1be7a8e673c4-2810-0000050d55bc2a55_file.jpg?w=770" src="https://golfyball.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/523df6c0-2020-4931-9870-1be7a8e673c4-2810-0000050d55bc2a55_file.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3467" />

This fact is even more fun when you realise the prosecutor in the court scenes is played by Richard Lintern – or Dr Thomas Chamberlain whom he plays in Silent Witness, opposite Freddie’s sister Emilia. Co-incidentally I read yesterday that he’s leaving Silent Witness. I could probably come up with a whole post on my love/hate relationship with the long running Silent Witness – but thats for another day.

I’d really like to catch the Oscar winning “Parasite” at the cinema this weekend, so that might be a thing for this evening or tomorrow. Battery has arrived for daughters car, so there’s that to fit… lots to do.

Happy Valentine’s Day
Don’t fall for the expensive nonsense.
